The transformation of this historic Wheaton, Illinois, home is the perfect example of how a skillful designer can create a functional and aesthetic living space. The PB Kitchen Design Team was also very excited to partner with Interior Designer, Carol Most, on this project.
In the original floor plan, an unfortunately large partition wall cut the space in two, which made it difficult for this young family to interact. Once this barrier was removed, the peninsula was repurposed as a casual seating area making for a less formal, kid-friendly place where the children can color, have a snack, or simply chat about their busy day while mom and dad tend to meal prep.
In the image below, the room immediately changes its mood with the fitted glass front cabinetry that beautifully frames the windows on the kitchen’s perimeter. Everyday dishes and occasional serving pieces are displayed, creating a sense of warmth and personalization.
The location of the refrigerator remained the same while all the other major kitchen appliances were relocated. The old sink wall was the longest wall, so it made sense to put the 48″ Wolf range there. Now, there is an ideal amount of counter space to either side of the range, not the overabundant and wasted space that existed before in the images below.
The sink is a natural fit centered on the wall space to the right, and not below the window as it is conveniently placed. Open shelving perfectly complements the sink zone with items that are frequently used by the family (glasses, coffee mugs) and a magnetic strip to hold the knives, at the ready for meal prep.
The end result is stunning visually, but more importantly, the space works for the family. This classic Wheaton, Illinois home has been lovingly restored to include a kitchen space that respects its history, yet fits the lifestyle of its young and energetic family.
