EuroCucina is a biannual trade event in Milan, Italy, that began in the 1970s to showcase everything innovative in kitchen design. As the demand for more cutting-edge kitchens increases year after year, more than 300,000 people from over 60 countries descended on the city known best for fashion to see the latest in kitchen design.
While designers from the world’s most prominent brands in the industry use EuroCucina as a reveal of their company’s most innovative and emerging designs and technology, the show did feature some consistent themes across the board. Dan McFadden, our PB Kitchen Design foreign correspondent, jetted over the pond to get inspired and brought back with him some modern methods to spice up your next kitchen remodel.
Wood cabinets go au naturale.
There was a notable absence of high gloss finishes and melamine cabinets from the trend-setting European cabinet makers. Instead, minimalist kitchens featured grain-rich textures and matte finishes which instantly took center stage. This shift in trend highlighted light and dark woods as a prominent force at EuroCucina 2016.
Emerging trend – island and peninsula seating.
A smooth integration of cantilevered counter tops for seating was everywhere. Mostly displayed in wood finishes, these bracket-less extensions seem well-suited for American kitchen design as we do love our island seating!
Slide it and hide it.
Baking centers, coffee and beverage bars are no longer exposed but neatly tucked away thanks to many clever and smooth operating sliding door mechanisms.
Light ’em up.
Cabinet lighting is everywhere, which is certainly no news flash. Yet LED lighting technology advances and with it, a natural application into cabinets. Changing the way we display and functionally use lighting in cabinets, no matter what the space, LED lighting is here to stay.
