Built-in kitchen storage has its benefits as the idea of “everything in its place” comes to life easily when a kitchen designer considers the way you use your kitchen and the number of items that need a home. Custom cabinetry is not just for your dishes, utensils, and pantry ware, in fact homeowners are really diving into getting organized, no matter what needs storing.
Some of the top reasons for installing built-in storage according to the 2017 Houzz Kitchen Trend Report include:
- Make better use of space (76%)
- Make it easier to find items (56%)
- Reduce Clutter (49%)
- Utilize unreachable spaces (44%)
- Make cooking and baking easier (14%)
Clutter in the kitchen seems to be on the forefront of everyone’s mind these days, and psychologist, Clifford N. Lazarus rings in about the effects of visual “noise” in his recent article in Psychology Today.
“People become revved up by and inured to visual chaos, too,” explains Lazarus. “And when people are in aesthetically pleasing, organized and uncluttered surroundings, they also feel more relaxed, at peace and calmer.”
Professional organizer, Marie Kondo, in her new book Spark Joy: An illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up (a follow up publication of her New York Times best selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing) talks in depth about organization in the kitchen and the importance of knowing exactly what you have on hand.
“What matters is the ability to see where everything is stored,” Kondo writes in Spark Joy.
Kondo also states that clutter isn’t entirely caused by excess, rather, when items are not returned to their appropriate “home” she explains that, “storage should reduce the effort needed to put things away, not the effort needed to get them out.”
So let’s talk specific methods of built-in storage and which ten are on the rise in popularity during kitchen remodel planning stages…
