The team at PB Kitchen Design are true professionals. Both Dave and Dan are very thoughtful, and comprehensive, in the design process. They understand all the small things and workflows that should be considered as best practice during a kitchen remodel. There is not an item that they brought up that we have not benefited from. With such a large investment required, one always wonders will there be value commensurate with that investment. We can attest to this being the case with PB Kitchen Design.
Scoping and Design Phase: Dave and Dan listened to our requirements and design elements that were important to us, even if some would have thought they were odd… Such as the use of Corten steel somewhere in the design… They checked that box, while making sure the aesthetic was not overpowering and provided several options. “The work triangle” works perfectly based on our space available.
Budgeting and Investment: The PB team knew our all in budget, and worked to accommodate. They provided options in various areas where we could save based on scaling back some design elements. In the end we ended up going over budget (does anyone not?) but it was based on us not wanting to compromise since we will only be renovating one kitchen in our lifetime! The elements over budget made sense and were clearly understood.
Contractor Recommendation: The PB team has an arsenal of resources to recommend, and provided one resource that would work best with our unique home (mid century modern) with all trades knowledge to perform the ultimate work required. Steve Dority is a perfectionist and filled this role well. We were hoping to be complete by July 4th, and ended up being done by Thanksgiving, but this was due to a desire for a polished concrete floor that Steve discovered was not possible due to structural engineering constraints that moved us to a wood floor which ultimately caused our original timeline to push. The resulting floor is gorgeous by the way.
End Result: We received a kitchen remodel with no design surprises and a very satisfying end result.
We would recommend PB Kitchen Design when you perform your own search.

Every detail—from the hardware and surface materials to the lighting and appliances—was carefully considered in the design of our kitchen. We wanted our kitchen to reflect an attitude of permanence and timelessness while feeling modern and forward-looking. This was no easy task. The small footprint of our historic home imposed many challenges, yet PB Kitchen Designs succeeded our expectations in making our kitchen gracious and relevant for today. Quiet, consistent, and natural—our kitchen is now the serene space of our dreams. PB Kitchen designers are true masters of taste, bringing luxe effects to even modest dimensions, through attention to proportion, materials, and colors. Through all phases of the project, their designers were skillful, engaged, and timely—a winning combination for success in any design project.

Past Basket has designed three kitchens for me. All three were amazing. The help with placement of cabinets and variety of materials has made our kitchens unique and functional. Dan was sensitive to our varying esthetics and made a new kitchen look as if were there initially. Actually, one of the kitchens was designed for a new house; the other two for a 1950’s mid-century home and a 1978 contemporary. The two homes that we sold were sold quickly, primarily because of the kitchens. The 1978 home where we live now centers around the kitchen. No guest has ever seen it without commenting on how beautiful it is. (And that kitchen was installed 10 years ago!) I cannot recommend Past Basket strongly enough. I have had only the very best results using their services.

Past Basket Design sets a new standard for attention to detail. Over the years, I have been involved in five complete kitchen remodels and even with all of that experience, Past Basket Design was able to raise the bar and surprise me. Their designers provided great support through all phases of the project, responding to each comment and question with thoughtfulness and purpose. I now have my dream kitchen thanks to this wonderful, collaborative effort!

I had 100% confidence in Past Basket

When we decided to finally to take on a master bathroom expansion and master bedroom redesign we knew that we would go back to Past Basket. They had done our kitchen 9 years ago, It was a great experience then and we still enjoy our kitchen everyday. After completing two major projects with Past Basket we can honestly say there isn’t one thing that we wish had done differently. That is how much they can bring to a project. Their designs for us are timeless , functional and beautiful. They are very professional, no surprises and no drama. There are many things we like about working with Past Basket. They listen well to their clients . The project is a collaboration as they work seamlessly with you and the contractor. I felt that it is was our desires and goals that were drivers in the design and not someone else’s vision for our space. They are great guides in the entire process, bringing their experience , expertise, resources and attention to detail to your project.

I have been working with Past Basket as an independent contractor on and off for approx. 25 years. Whether it’s a small galley kitchen, a large gourmet kitchen or an upscale bath remodel, the designs they do are outstanding. When it was time to do my own kitchen, I had Past Basket design ours and we couldn’t be happier with all the details and layout. I would highly recommend them on your next remodel project.

The team at Past Basket is experienced and talented. They listen to the desires of clients then provide design alternatives from which to choose. Through the process, they are patient; they listen, they share ideas and adjust accordingly, always in a low pressure, low key style. We never once felt like we moved the project forward until we were comfortable with our decision. It has been a positive experience.

I think on every building project there are unexpected little things that come up. When something wasn’t quite right, they took care of it immediately – no delays and no excuses.

Dan was brilliant in designing a kitchen that was everything we wanted. From asking the right questions in the design phase to his knowledge of space and functionality, he was able to make a seemingly daunting task enjoyable and rewarding. In addition, he went above and beyond in helping us conceptually with other areas of the house. This demonstrated to us that his first priority was making sure we were going to be happy with our finished product. I would highly recommend Dan and the entire staff at Past Basket.

Thank you for all you have done for us. Your contribution to our home is one the most appreciated and valued.
Thank you so much for your patience and input. You have perfected the ability to not only select material that will complement the overall kitchen design, but to do it without being pushy or trying to impose your own personal taste. Your talent and skill are greatly appreciated.

In 2007, when we decided the old kitchen was just too tired (having survived three children), we decided to finally invest in the kitchen of our dreams. This time we were going to do it right. Extensive research and recommendations from trusted professionals brought us to Past Basket. Immediately when we started working with them, the difference between our previous experience and the professionalism of Past Basket became evident. Our new kitchen is custom built to follow an individual design that was developed just for us, predicated on our taste, lifestyle and needs.

If you are looking for a custom kitchen, then look no further than Past Basket. These guys are the pros working with you every step of the way overlooking no small detail. Since old houses are puzzles – putting a new kitchen in that looks like it had been there since the house was built – but with all the modern amenities was my goal. Past Basket created an award winning kitchen for me that looks like it was part of the original house.
C.K, Hinsdale, Illinois
We chose Past Basket because of their great reputation, and they lived up to it. They are very professional, do great design, are easy to work with and were creative within the constraints of the project.

Past Basket designed my kitchen during our recent renovation of our home. Past Basket was recommended to me by a friend who had used them previously to design and install her kitchen which I admired. My experience with them was excellent from start to finish. They, Dan and Debbie, worked with me to understand how I used the space, added innovative suggestions to my ideas and helped me achieve my objectives within my budget. The many small modifications that resulted in a terrific finished product did not result in extra costs and were dealt with smoothly and efficiently. They interfaced with my contractor seamlessly, working with me and the contractor on appliance selection, lighting, electrical placement, selecting counter tops, plumbing fixtures etc. Eight months after the installation when I had a small problem with one panel all it took was one e-mail and it was fixed! This is the second kitchen I have installed and I can’t emphasis enough how much better my experience with Past Basket was compared to my first installation. The end product is terrific.

When we were researching design firms, I found a kitchen I liked in a design magazine. I brought the picture to Past Basket and they said, “We did that”. Our decision was made.

Past Basket is a dream come true! From the moment Dave, Linda and Debbie came into our home; they imagined a beautiful space and then made it a reality. Our small first floor was awkward and inefficient. The Past Basket team viewed not just the space, but the rest of our home to see how we lived. They asked lots of questions to design exactly what we wanted, while using how we were going to utilize the space as their foundation. Faced with so many decisions in selecting cabinetry, surfaces, appliances, fixtures, lighting, furniture, paint color, fabrics – I was overwhelmed. They guided me through the process step by step, continually reassuring me that they would not let me make a bad decision! It was actually fun watching the creative process unfold. In the end, the space is their vision but my taste. It is the perfect blend of function for my young family and design that I am delighted to share with family and friends. It is beautiful and comfortable. I could not have designed this without their expertise and would not have had the courage to rebuild my first floor from the studs out without the confidence and experience they possessed. Equally important to their talent is the team’s professionalism. They were punctual for appointments, kept me on task to ensure seamless progress, communicated thoroughly so I knew exactly what was going in behind the scenes at all times, was on-site for every installation to guarantee that everything was done right the first time. I love my home more than ever, all thanks to the magnificent team at Past Basket. They have my highest recommendation!
K.G, Naperville, IL
Past Basket impressed us with their creative design skills and resources. They went out of their way to make this a fun and rewarding experience. We came in on time and on budget – we wouldn’t do a kitchen without them.
J.S., Kenosha, WI
I looked at many sources of cabinetry and kitchen design before deciding to work with Past Basket. Their approach of being the catalyst instead of the designers with all the answers was not the norm. The Past Basket designers have an ability to understand the client’s task and their kitchens reflect that.
M.T., Winnetka, IL
I finally got it right! This is my fourth kitchen renovation and our experience working with Past Basket was far and above all of the rest. Debbie and Dave are seasoned and skilled designers. One of the keys to their success in my opinion is the very thorough interview they conduct at the beginning of the project. It helps establish good communication which builds the trust you need to achieve a superior outcome. To my surprise Debbie spent hours outside of Past Basket helping me choose tile, countertops, appliances, plumbing fixtures, and lighting to name a few. They stayed equally as energetic throughout the entire project following through on every promise, and making sure everything was done to my satisfaction. Past Basket is best in class!
C.J, Hinsdale, IL
Having worked with Past Basket on numerous projects I can attest to their consistent high quality, both in design and customer service. The experience that Dave and Dan bring is evidenced by how smooth the projects go, all the details worked out in advance.

When we bought our house, it had a great location, nice yard, beautiful living room, everything we wanted, almost. It had been on the market for a long time. Why? The kitchen was a liability. It was unattractive, but also nonfunctional. It had great space and potential, (even a fireplace) but no one seemed to know how to lay it out most efficiently. The Past Basket team and we worked out a plan over a series of meetings. This effort and exchange resulted in a makeover that was truly fantastic. The stove and dishwasher were repositioned. An island with seating and several drawers was installed. Spaces above and alongside the refrigerator were utilized. The kitchen is now functional and aesthetically pleasing. We could not be happier with the results!
K.F., Whitefish Bay, WI
During our 2012 kitchen renovation my general contractor put me in touch with Dave at Past Basket. Dave and Debbie came up with a beautiful, functional plan for my new kitchen The cabinets were first quality and the job was completed in a timely fashion.
I would recommend without hesitation the design team at Past Basket, so much so, that they designed the renovation of our Master Bath this past Summer, with equally beautiful results.
J.N., Lake Forest, IL
Past Basket performed an extensive rehabilitation of our kitchen, dining room and powder room. Like many homes built in the 70s, the floor plan consistened of seperated, closed rooms. We asked Past Basket to design and essentially rebuild the main rooms of the first floor from the foundation so that it would open up our space and take advantage of the natural beauty our lot provided from a lake and large, five hundred year-old trees. The job not only involved new floors, windows, lighting, cabinets etc., it included moving HVAC duct work, plumbing and gas lines. We had seen impressive examples of Past Basket’s past work prior to hiring it, so we were very pleased, but not at all surpirised by the outstanding result that was achieved. But we were pleasantly surprised as Past Basket exceeded our highest expectations in its professionalism, efficiency and dedication to our project. We did not have as good of an appreciation of the importance for these qualities when the project began as we do now that we have experienced it. The team Past Basket assembled was most knowledgeable and experienced. They were clearly dedicted to assuring that each detail was consistent with the individualized preferences of the customer while also assuring that the result of the whole project would be even better than the sum of each part. They were pateint in explaining choices and consequences and committed more individualized time than we anticipated. They visited the site often, repeatedly measuring and remeasuring to make sure that any issues would be identified before the the project got too far along. They were readily avialable whenever needed and always prompt to take action. The team’s advice on everything from cabinetry to island stools and from countertops to lighting and appliances refected a depth of knowledge and eye for detail that resulted in a finished job that was beyond our highest hopes.

Excellent product, design, and attention to detail, but most of all unbelievable customer service. Could not be happier we absolutely highly recommend Past Basket Design.

Past Basket did an amazing job on our kitchen remodel. We live in an 1860 house with an 11 x 11 kitchen. Prior to the remodel, the kitchen was cramped and isolated from the rest of our home. This was ok when it was just me and my husband, but four children later, it was not working! We were thinking of taking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room, but were apprehensive that this might be out of character for the house. And here is where Past Basket saved the day…I had admired a Past Basket kitchen in another vintage home. That kitchen fit right in with the rest of the home, and it looked like a wall had been removed. Then I learned that Dave McFadden, Past Basket’s founder, is an engineer. Past Basket looked like the perfect combination of attention to aesthetics and true design expertise. So I called, and the planning started. From the first drawings until the “after” pictures were taken, Past Basket was a complete joy to work with. In the design phase, they listened carefully to our wants and needs, and guided us through the many decisions that had to be made. During the construction phase, we encountered some surprises, as is usual with old home remodels. Past Basket smoothed over every little challenge. In the end, part of the wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed, and it still harmonizes with the rest of the house, due to a few design tweaks by Past Basket. Every inch of our kitchen is put to work, right down to the step stool concealed in our toe kick area. And of course, the kitchen is beautiful; when I’m not busy preparing meals, sometimes I just sit at our island and look around and smile. Thank you, Past Basket, for transforming how we live in our house!

Dave McFadden, Dan’s Dad, designed our kitchen in 1997. Recently we refinanced our mortgage and had an appraisal done. The appraiser asked me if the kitchen was about 3 or 4 years old. He was stunned to learn that the kitchen is almost 18 years old. The McFadden’s designed a truly timeless kitchen that works as well now as it did way back in the 90’s! Thanks Past Basket!

Dear Dave, Dan, Debbie and Linda,
Finally! The Master Bath is completed and open for business. I know the “odds” on its completion were not in our favor. So many starts and stops with this project! Your patience and unwavering enthusiasm throughout the “design” phase were unbelievable – thank you. The finished project is absolute beauty and perfection. The layout suits the space perfectly. Everything is functional and the space is such a pleasure to be in – thank you. And finally, the support you provided especially to me during the actual demolition and installation process was SO appreciated – thank you. We truly love our new space. We cannot thank you enough for our new and beautiful Master Bathroom!
C.G., Wheaton, IL
We worked with Past Basket Design on three projects – A kitchen (2005), master bath (2008), and most recently a house full of cabinets in our Florida home (2011). As clients that truly enjoy the design process we felt like the Past Basket approach was a great fit. The team at Past Basket Design comes with no preconceived ideas about their vision or ours. They are good at listening and really want to understand how we visualize and want to use each new space both from a functional and aesthetic point of view. At Past Basket Design we did not feel rushed to make a decision. With each project, they provided good input and options from which to choose showing that they were closely listening to our desires. Their design concepts were easy to understand and portrayed technical detail. They brought professionalism to each of our different projects, were team players with our contractors, and a pleasure with whom to work! Once all details were finalized, they had materials delivered and installed accurately, and efficiently, providing oversight throughout the processes. Would certainly recommend them for any new construction or remodel project.

My husband and I took on our third old house renovation project this past year, a rather large renovation of a 1925 Dutch Colonial. There were many aspects of the design process that we were comfortable doing ourselves; however, the kitchen was not one of them. We wanted the kitchen of this home to be the kitchen we had only dreamed of in our former renovation projects. We had strolled through the Past Basket showroom many times over the years and always loved what we saw. So, as we started thinking about our new kitchen, we decided to enlist Past Basket to help us with our design. We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, but we were certain that there were aspects of good kitchen design that we were overlooking or simply did not know. The team at Past Basket was so gracious. They listened carefully to what we envisioned, asked insightful questions, offered helpful suggestions, and greatly improved upon our ideas. The design team worked alongside of us to help us achieve our vision being careful not to create a kitchen that didn’t fit our style or the way in which our family uses our kitchen. Additionally, they took our budget into consideration offering us different options to help us make the most of our resources. Throughout the entire process, the Past Basket team was professional, courteous, enthusiastic, and helpful. Our builders (who have a lot of experience working with high-end cabinetry) were amazed by the high level of quality in material and the ongoing support from the owners and designers of Past Basket. We now have the kitchen of our dreams and enjoy cooking for family and friends. Everyone comments on how much they love the kitchen and how well the space works. We love our kitchen and tell all our friends about how delightful it is to work with Past Basket of Geneva.
A.W., Geneva, IL
Finding The Past Basket to complete our kitchen renovation was truly the experience I was looking for. They knew all the right places to recommend for viewing and purchasing, yet were willing to allow us to use whomever we wanted to complete the work. As it turned out, we took advantage of their suggestions and our kitchen remodel was a total success. They were able to make adjustments when issues arose, and their solutions were always of the highest standards. I wholeheartedly recommend their expertise for a remodel or new project.
